I'm not disabled in that I need to use a wheelchair, but I often carry heavy boxes or use carts to bring things from my car to the KSA offices and I've often noticed how the wheelchair access buttons are not always operational. Apparently they can be turned on or off and can even be placed into a setting where they keep the door open. I believe facilities or security at the end of each day, shuts them to the off position, but they don't always get turned back on the next morning.

I think it would be good to do an audit from time to time to see just how accessible Kwantlen is. Perhaps a wheelchair could be rented and used to see how easy it is to get around. Or if there are students who get involved with the disabilities commission who are using wheelchairs, they could volunteer.

I'm sure there are other accessbility issues for persons with disabilities, but this is one challenge I have noticed over the years.

I volunteer my services to ride around in a wheelchair and see how hard it is to get around each campus Cheesy.

Well as far as Surrey Campus is concerned this has been an ongoing issue for a long time. However the main concerns I have been presented with is the lack of accessibility in D building, as their seems to be less buttons on doors. As well there are less accessible washrooms for students with disabilities in D building. From what I understand this is because D was built earlier then G and as such G was built with wheelchair accessibility more in mind then when D was built.

I have seen students with accessiblity issues struggle in trying to get doors open, but cant, cause security disables the buttons each evening.

The handicapped washroom in the new library has been out of service since it was opened, and nothing is being done about it.

I think Ken is away right now on conference but when he returns he should write a letter to Kwantlen on behalf of KSA on this issue.

How impossible would it be to install automatic doors?  Half the time the buttons dont work to open the doors and those library doors are bloody heavy!  I was surprised when the new admissions building and library opened and saw that the doors were not automatic.  Even the oldest buildings at SFU and UBC have been upgraded to have automatic opening doors... when you get within 10' of the door, it swings open.

I totally agree with you on that. Maybe this is something that should be brought up with Ken, our disabilities liason.
